Story of the Beginning
Our forty year journey dawned in an old traditional Kuwaiti house, a modest building with limited amenities, yet our will power knew no boundaries and our united efforts were so determined to succeed regardless of the challenges.
With this determination, the Kuwait Society for the Handicapped started operating in 1971 by taking in thirty children with disabilities. Its primary objective laid in attending to what had been overlooked by governmental institutions namely creating a private charity institution providing care for children with severe and multiple disabilities, shining a ray of hope for them and driving them to live life to the fullest and asserting their capability of being included into society by rendering complete medical, psychological, social, educational and rehabilitation services to them.
The notion of founding and establishing the Society began with two highly regarded and reputed ladies, Dr. Munira Al-Qatami and Mrs. Munira Khaled Al-Mutawa, who both received their higher education outside Kuwait and who have been exposed in those countries to the latest scientific knowledge and advancements in the field of disability.
Dr Al-Qatami and Mrs. Al-Mutawa were united by a strong desire to serve their fellow citizens, especially upon coming in touch with children with profound disabilities at that
time, together with the lack of services and resources.
They proposed the idea of establishing a private charitable institution to care for children with severe disabilities, an idea that was hailed and welcomed by many, most notable of which was Mr. Abdul Rahman Salem Al-Ateeqi, the Minister of Finance at that time, Mrs. Moodi Sultan Al-Eissa and a group of 28 founding members. The Kuwait Society for the Handicapped was officially inaugurated in 1971 owing to the efforts and endeavors of the founding members.
